Abstract: A three-dimensional beam propagation method based on the Galerkin method (3D-GM-BPM) is proposed for directly modeling a parallel directional coupler based on optical rib waveguides. The computational efficiency is raised due to the small matrix derived from this method, which is reduced to solver a first-order normal differential equation system. A tangent-type function is applied to map the infinite region into closed region. As a result, the artificial boundary condition is eliminated.
