Abstract: The linear thermal expansion coefficient of material defined as the change in length suffered by a unit length of the special rod when its temperature is changed by 1℃ is really the thermal deformation coefficient of its length, so there exists an error of theory in the coefficient. This paper details these problems and puts forward a new scientific definition of the linear thermal expansion coefficient.
