Abstract: Hydrotalcite Mg6 Al2(OH) 16 CO3·4H2O has been prepared by using both microwave irradiation and conventional heating methods during the ageing process. X-ray diffraction show s that the same materials are obtained in each case, but the microwave process is superior in that a much shorter aging time is required. Mg4 Al2(OH) 12[C10 H6(SO3) 2]·4H2O has been prepared by using microwave and conventional heating methods during the intercalation process. XRD indicates that the sample produced by the microwave method is superior to that produced by conventional heating. Mg4Al2(OH) 12(PW12O40) 2/3·4H2O has been prepared by microwave methods. XRD and TPDE show that there is a strong interaction between the heteropolyanion and the layers of hydrotalcite.
