Abstract: Digital model reconstruction based on coordinate measuring of existing physical objects is widely used in a variety of situations. The data obtained through popular measuring machines, such as laser scanners, are mostly digitized data organized in sections. In this paper, the problem of B-spline surface fitting based on digitized section data is addressed. An algorithm, which combined bisection and least square method, is put forward. The algorithm can greatly compress the digitized points and generate compact-surface representation while satisfying the given tolerance. Examples in the paper show that the algorithm is effective and practical.
