Abstract: This paper proposes an algorithm of image segmentation based on pattern classification according to the features of soil microphotographs. The algorithm can overcome the influence of holes in the soil particles on extracting the parameters. Finally, a new general tracking boundary method is used to acquire the quantitative parameters of the soil particles. The methods and techniques presented in this paper are very useful for studying the properties of the soil particles under variance and destruction of particle shapes caused by forces.
