Abstract: For increasing the recording density of the magnetic recording disk, the flying height of the magnetic head has to be reduced. This is very difficult as there are many protrusions on the disk which are difficult to inspect.
This paper presents the magnetic disk testing system monitored by acoustic emission. Based on the receiving signals, the surface quality of the disk could be evaluated.
In addition, by using the AE system, the processes of removing protrusions on the disk could be monitored, and the characteristics of the taking off and landing of the magnetic head could be observed.
